*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 09/12/2020
Volunteer (ages 18+ ONLY) and be a part of another urgent mission to ensure 40,000+ kids in Wake County have the technology they need to participate in learning alongside their peers this Fall. Please read the volunteer information and safety requirements! Volunteers must register to participate. Volunteers are encouraged (but not required) to sign up for multiple shifts to minimize contact. NO technical skills required.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Back in April, Activate Good partnered with the Wake County Public School System for Operation Access, an effort to set up 10,500 wireless hot spots to ensure all students have reliable internet access and can continue to participate in their remaining spring classes.  We’re together once again to bring another BIG IMPACT project to life! The transition to remote classes during the Coronavirus pandemic means access to supporting technology at home is even more critical. For Operation Access Part 2, volunteers will help hand out 40,000+ Chromebook laptops and 10,000 hotspots to students and families across 5 different sites in Wake County to ensure all students have reliable technology access and can participate in classes!

**ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST BRING THEIR OWN MASKS AND WEAR THEM PROPERLY**

Skills: No technical skills required. Volunteers may be expected to stand and move around for much of their shift. We recommend comfy shoes!

Age: This opportunity is for volunteers age 18+ only.

Details:  Households in Wake County need Chromebook laptops and Wifi hotspots in order to allow students to learn remotely alongside their peers. We need a massive mobilization of volunteers to help get these laptops handed out to families on time so they can start their fall education. If you’re healthy and safe, help us out and make an AMAZING positive impact on local students!

Social Media:  Volunteers are asked to refrain from posting photos of people on social media to protect the privacy of families. Please do not share specific information about device pickups, as families will be scheduled to pick up their devices as they become ready. If you know of a WCPSS family in need of technology support, please direct them to their school for more information.

Volunteers will help with:

  • Greeting people at the door/outside, reading screening questions and utilizing a contactless thermometer during screening  and pointing them in the right direction.
  • Ushering folks into the hall and pointing them in the right direction.
  • Managing flow at the entry of the check out area and directing people to the next available station.
  • Working the floor in the check out area and direct people.
  • Making sure check out stations are stocked with devices (pick up devices from another location, deliver them – will require some lifting)
  • Floating – depending on the layout of the building, either to help people get in or out or to the Help Desk area, unboxing items, and supporting cleaning needs between family visits. Also, supporting Activate Good site leaders.

WCPSS Employee Volunteers will help with:

  • Staffing the check out stations – accessing student information, verifying identity, checking out appropriate devices.
  • Staffing the Help Desk – helping families log in to their Chromebook, explaining hotspots.

Refreshments:

  • Bottled water and snacks provided by WCPSS will be available at each site.

Volunteer Safety Requirements

**ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST BRING THEIR OWN MASKS AND WEAR THEM PROPERLY**

IMPORTANT: Per WCPSS policy, all volunteers must be checked against the sexual offender database. Volunteers are required to bring an active Photo ID.

*WCPSS employees will only need to share their ID badge upon arrival.

We care about and rely on all of our volunteers – so this is IMPORTANT. For the health and safety of all, please do not join us at this project if you:

  • Are experiencing any symptoms or feel unwell
  • Share space with someone who is ill
  • Have recently traveled out of the country or to any COVID-19 hot spots
  • Have been exposed to any confirmed case of COVID-19

Please do not put yourself or anyone else at risk by coming to volunteer when sick. Any volunteer displaying signs of illness during this project will kindly be directed to return home, monitor their health, and volunteer at another time.

REMINDER – IMPORTANT: Per WCPSS policy, all volunteers must be checked against the sexual offender database. Volunteers are required to bring an active Photo ID.

Extra Health Precautions to Protect Volunteers

**ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST BRING THEIR OWN MASKS AND WEAR THEM PROPERLY**

We are taking extra measures to protect all volunteers throughout this project. All volunteers will be expected to follow these rules and requirements.

  • ALL volunteers MUST wash hands upon check-in.
    • Best practice from the CDC: wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Site leads will conduct temperature checks and ask each volunteer COVID-19 health screening questions upon check-in.
  • We, unfortunately, cannot provide PPE such as gloves or masks due to the high demand. Volunteers are required to bring their own masks and wear them properly while on site.
  • There will be hand sanitizer for volunteer use on site.
  • Volunteer placements or seating at least six feet apart will be clearly marked.
  • Volunteers are asked to bring ONLY the essentials inside with them – ID, phone, keys, and any PPE – so as to limit the risk of transmission through items.
  • Additionally, leaders will encourage frequent handwashing and remind folks to stay at least six feet apart.
  • Table surfaces continue to be cleaned and sanitized regularly according to school
  • Additionally, families and other guests arriving at school sites will also be required to wear masks and will undergo a health screening before entry.

♥ Thank you for your help to ensure thousands of local kids get access to learn online! ♥
