Independence Day Celebration at Old Salem

Celebrate the Fourth of July at Old Salem! Did you know the first official Fourth of July Celebration in North Carolina was held in Old Salem? In 1783, Governor Alexander Martin proclaimed July 4th a day of thanksgiving and peace, and Salem residents gathered for food, fellowship, and festivities. This year, we invite you to be part of that tradition. Join us for a full day of music, history, and hands-on experiences as we welcome visitors of all ages to commemorate Independence Day at the site of North Carolina’s very first July 4th celebration.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Explore Old Salem Museums & Gardens—a historic site sharing the stories of Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples in the American South. Our museums, historic town, and gardens offer an immersive and memorable historical experience for all visitors.
